What happened

On August 14, 2026, Kartoon Studios, Inc. (NYSE American: TOON) reported financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The reported figures, without interpretation:

Revenue was approximately $5.82 million. Net income was approximately $27.0 million. Reported earnings were approximately $0.38 per share. Cash and marketable securities stood at $40.5 million, with no long-term debt.

For context on the trajectory, per the Q1 2026 results published May 15, 2026, revenue was $7.24 million in the March quarter, down 24% from $9.5 million in Q1 2025, with a net loss of $6.37 million, or $0.10 per share. For the full year 2025, revenue was $39.4 million, operating income was negative $12.9 million, and net income was negative $24.5 million, or $0.49 per diluted share.

The company has announced approximately $78.5 million in litigation settlements. Per the August 14 announcement, additional settlement proceeds remain in escrow. Management stated that the second quarter largely reflects the company's historical operating model rather than the potential economics of its emerging owned-intellectual-property strategy.

Verified versus company-stated. The revenue, net income, earnings per share and cash figures above are drawn from the company's own second quarter results announcement dated August 14, 2026. The Form 10-Q for the quarter had not been reviewed at the time of writing, so the composition of the $27.0 million, the exact settlement amounts recognised in the period, and the escrow terms are company-stated and not independently verified. The characterisation of a strategic transformation is management's framing. The $78.5 million settlement total is a company-announced figure.

Why it matters for a company this size

At a company with a $5 billion market value, a legal settlement is a footnote in other income. At Kartoon Studios it is larger than the entire enterprise.

Run the arithmetic. Net income of $27.0 million arrived in a quarter with $5.82 million of revenue. The company lost $24.5 million across the whole of 2025 on $39.4 million of revenue. A single quarter's settlement income has therefore more than erased a full year of operating losses, and it did so without a single additional unit of content being sold.

The balance sheet effect is more consequential than the income statement effect. Cash and marketable securities of $40.5 million sits against a market capitalization reported between roughly $32.6 million and $35.4 million in late July and early August 2026. The market is valuing the operating business, the animation library, the Mainframe Studios production arm, the Toon Media Networks distribution platform and the Stan Lee Universe and Hundred Acre Wood franchises at less than zero once the cash is subtracted.

That is a statement about market expectations, not about worth. It generally means one of two things: the market expects the cash to be consumed by an operating business that loses money, or it doubts the cash will be received and retained in the form stated. Both are testable over the coming quarters, and both are more testable at this scale than they would be at any larger company, because there are few enough moving parts to watch directly.

What the market reaction tells us

Trailing figures show the stock at roughly $0.58 to $0.59 in early August 2026, with a 52-week range of approximately $0.53 to $0.90. Market capitalization was reported at $34.85 million on July 27, 2026 and approximately $35.4 million on August 5, 2026.

What that range says is that the market has not repriced the company for the settlement. A stock trading near the bottom of its 52-week range, below the value of the cash on its own balance sheet, is a stock whose holders are not treating a reported $27.0 million quarterly profit as a durable change in the business.

Short interest supports the reading. Short interest stood at 2.9 million shares, representing 5.2% of the float, up 125.1% from the prior reporting period and up 134.8% since August 2025. Positioning against the company more than doubled over the period in which the settlement news developed.

What bulls will say

The cash is real, it is unencumbered, and there is no long-term debt against it. $40.5 million of cash and marketable securities at a company valued near $35 million means the market is assigning a negative value to an operating business that generated $39.4 million of revenue in 2025. Management has secured an Amazon Prime Video agreement and holds two franchises approaching commercialisation, Hundred Acre Wood and the Stan Lee Universe, with a series debut scheduled for September 1, 2026 and a tentpole franchise targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Additional settlement proceeds remain in escrow, meaning the cash figure may not be the final one. Operating discipline has improved: per Q1 2026, total operating expenses fell 20% year over year to $10.0 million and loss from operations improved 9% to $2.8 million. A company with cash, no debt, owned intellectual property and a distribution agreement has optionality that a $35 million valuation does not obviously reflect.

What bears will say

Revenue has now fallen in two consecutive quarters, from $9.5 million to $7.24 million to $5.82 million, and the $27.0 million of net income contains no evidence that anyone bought more content. Litigation proceeds are non-recurring by definition: this quarter's earnings per share of $0.38 will not repeat, and the trailing twelve month earnings per share of negative $0.49 is the figure describing the operating business. Cash covering the market capitalization is only protective if the cash is not consumed, and an operating business losing money consumes cash by construction. On an annualised Q1 operating cash use of roughly $11.7 million, the $40.5 million balance funds under four years of the current shape of the business with no improvement. The franchise launches are dated but unproven, and management's own statement that the quarter reflects the historical model rather than the emerging strategy is an acknowledgment that the transformation has not yet shown up in any reported number.

We do not resolve these here. The Form 10-Q and the next two quarters of revenue resolve them.

What to watch next

The Desk's read

Kartoon Studios has converted litigation into a balance sheet. That is a genuine achievement and it has left the company with $40.5 million of cash, no long-term debt, dated franchise launches and no immediate funding pressure, which is more than most companies of this size can say.

It has not converted litigation into a business. Revenue fell in both reported quarters of 2026. The $0.38 of quarterly earnings per share is a one-time event sitting on top of a trailing twelve month figure of negative $0.49.

We label this Neutral, because the cash argument and the revenue argument are both strong and they point in opposite directions. The Desk treats the settlement as runway, not as performance. What to watch is third quarter revenue, expected November 2026, and whether the September 1 series debut appears in it.
