Two facts define the small end of the market this year. The Russell 2000 rose 20% and the S&P 600 rose 21% through the first half of 2026, against 8.5% for the S&P 500 and 11.1% for the Nasdaq Composite, per Zacks research published June 30, 2026. And the supply of new small listed companies has effectively closed: just 13 microcap companies listed on Nasdaq and the NYSE in 2026 through late July, raising under $300 million between them, against 80 in 2025, per Bloomberg data cited by Fast Company.

Almost all of the attention has gone to companies selling compute. This list goes the other way. Every name below owns physical assets: acreage, a processing plant, a mineral deposit, a fleet. That has a specific consequence for how they should be read. A software company's cost of growth is engineering headcount. These companies' cost of growth is capital expenditure, and the money for it comes from equity, debt, or asset sales, each of which shows up differently on the balance sheet and each of which affects existing shareholders differently.

Screening note: these four cleared a liquidity test before anything else. Average daily dollar volume above roughly $100,000, market capitalization between $50 million and $500 million, and a verifiable price. A number of better-known names in these sectors did not clear it, mostly by growing past the ceiling.

Ordering: alphabetical by ticker. The order implies nothing about merit, quality, or prospects.

Price data: these figures were pulled between August 11 and August 31, 2026. Each entry states its own date. They are not a single simultaneous snapshot, and none should be treated as a current quote.

Epsilon Energy (NASDAQ: EPSN)

The only name here paying a dividend and buying back stock while growing production by a fifth.

Epsilon is a North American onshore independent producing natural gas in the Appalachian Basin in Pennsylvania and oil and gas in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, the Permian in Texas and New Mexico, and Western Canada. It also owns a gathering system, meaning the pipes that collect gas at the wellhead before it reaches an interstate line, which produces fee income independent of what the company's own wells produce.

Standout development: per second quarter results released August 12, 2026, and management commentary at EnerCom Denver, 2026 guidance implies 18% year-over-year production growth with oil output close to doubling. Marcellus production fell 16% quarter over quarter because of a planned suction pressure increase on the Auburn Gas Gathering System in May, a deliberate curtailment that raises the system's future throughput capacity. Five previously drilled wells are scheduled for completion with first production expected in December, forecast to add 6.5 million cubic feet per day net. The company sold overriding royalty interests in Susquehanna County on May 4, 2026 for $3.9 million, at approximately six times expected forward cash flow on assets representing about 1.5% of trailing upstream revenue.

Key risk: the trailing net loss is $3.50 million despite revenue of $67.66 million, and capital spending is heavily weighted to the second half of 2026, with over half of full-year capital not contributing to results until the fourth quarter. Management expects to draw the revolver from the third quarter to fund the ramp, which increases leverage from a stated 1.5 times EBITDA. A planned sale of the Durango office building did not close.

5E Advanced Materials (NASDAQ: FEAM)

A federally endorsed boron project with the most extreme share count increase on this list.

5E is developing the Fort Cady project in California's Mojave Desert, targeting boron and lithium. Boron is used in glass, ceramics, agriculture and permanent magnets, and the United States has limited domestic production. The company is pre-revenue.

Standout development: the Export-Import Bank of the United States announced an $8 million investment on August 10, 2026, and Fort Cady was named in the administration's critical minerals initiative announced at a White House roundtable on August 7, 2026, alongside a broader package that Reuters reported at about $3 billion. The company signed multiple offtake agreements during July 2026.

Key risk: dilution at a scale that has no parallel on this list. Shares outstanding rose 519% over one year to 41.52 million. The trailing net loss is $43.43 million against no revenue, operating cash flow is negative $20.03 million and capital expenditure negative $8.04 million, giving free cash flow of negative $28.07 million. Cash was $25.39 million with negligible debt. The company executed a 1-for-23 reverse split in February 2025, and the share price has fallen 55% over the trailing 52 weeks. An $8 million federal investment is validation, not funding: it is a small fraction of what building the project costs.

Ring Energy (NYSE American: REI)

Beat both lines in the second quarter, paid down $66 million of debt, and still trades under $1.50.

Ring is an independent oil and gas company holding interests across roughly 74,717 net developed acres in Andrews, Gaines, Crane, Ector, Winkler and Ward counties in Texas, plus acreage in Yoakum County, Texas and Lea County, New Mexico. Its focus is the Central Basin Platform, a mature part of the Permian where entry costs are low and horizontal drilling technology has changed what is recoverable.

Standout development: per second quarter results released August 5, 2026, revenue was $104.68 million against a $93.29 million consensus, with adjusted earnings of $0.10 per share against a $0.04 consensus. On July 2, 2026 the company announced it had paid down $66 million of debt and reaffirmed its borrowing base. It joined the Russell 3000 Index effective June 29, 2026. Management has issued revised 2026 and 2027 guidance built on longer horizontal laterals and improved margins, with 111 employees against 260.54 million shares outstanding.

Key risk: the trailing net loss is $220.27 million on revenue of $308.34 million, which is a figure of a scale that requires reading the impairment and writedown detail in the filings rather than the headline. The debt paydown was funded partly by a $65 million equity raise: 44.44 million shares priced at $1.35 in May, below the $1.78 close at the time. That is roughly 17% of the current share count issued at a discount. Revenue is down 3.3% year over year.

A small cap, not a microcap. Ring Energy at $377.78 million sits inside our $500 million coverage ceiling but above the $300 million line FINRA and the SEC use, which makes it a small cap by the standard definition. We cover the $300 to $500 million band and label it as what it is.

Westwater Resources (NYSE American: WWR)

A graphite plant that is 53% built, with a federal lender behind it and no customer under contract.

Westwater is building the first vertically integrated domestic supply of battery-grade natural graphite. Its Coosa deposit in Alabama is described by the company as the largest natural flake graphite deposit in the contiguous United States, and its Kellyton plant is designed to turn concentrate into coated spherical purified graphite, the material that forms the anode inside a lithium-ion battery. Almost all of that processing currently happens outside the United States.

Standout development: the Export-Import Bank approved a $25 million loan on August 10, 2026. The Coosa deposit was designated a FAST-41 covered project on March 31, 2026, placing it on the federal permitting dashboard with coordinated agency timelines, and a Section 404 permit application went to the US Army Corps of Engineers on June 15, 2026. Per the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q filed August 13, total assets were $185.97 million including $144.55 million of property, plant and equipment, with approximately $130 million already spent on Phase I.

Key risk: the funding gap and the empty order book. Phase I carries a $245 million estimate with roughly $115 million still to spend, against cash of $38.20 million at June 30 and the $25 million EXIM approval. The company retains $96.8 million of combined availability across its at-the-market and Lincoln Park equity facilities, which exceeds its entire market capitalization. Both disclosed customer agreements have been terminated: SK On on March 31, 2026 and FCA in November 2025. The company is pre-revenue with 20 employees.

How to research names like these

Start with liquidity, not the story. Multiply average daily share volume by the share price. Below roughly $100,000 a day, a position of any size cannot be exited without moving the price against you, regardless of how good the assets are. Run this before you read a single filing. It removed more candidates from this list than any other test.

For asset-heavy companies, find out how the next stage gets paid for. This is the question that separates outcomes in this group. Westwater has $96.8 million of untapped equity capacity against a $78.60 million market capitalization. 5E has issued 519% more shares in a year. Ring funded a debt paydown with a $65 million raise priced below market. Epsilon pays a dividend and buys stock back. Four companies, four completely different answers, and the answer determines what a share is worth by the time the asset produces.

Distinguish a government endorsement from government funding. Divide the announced federal amount by the project's remaining cost before deciding what it means. An $8 million EXIM investment and a $25 million EXIM loan are real validation and small fractions of what Fort Cady and Kellyton require.

Check whether anyone has agreed to buy the output. A processing plant with no binding offtake is a plant whose product has no contracted customer. Customer qualification activity is not a contract, and contracts get terminated: Westwater has lost two in ten months.

Read a large net loss before assuming the worst. Ring's $220.27 million trailing loss on $308.34 million of revenue is not an operating result of that magnitude. Impairments and writedowns at asset-heavy companies are non-cash and often reflect commodity price assumptions rather than business performance. Find the detail in the filings rather than reacting to the headline figure, and check operating cash flow alongside it.

Take governance flags seriously and investigate them yourself. A disputed board seat or a contested removal is not priced into a book value multiple. Where a concern has been raised publicly but not tested, read the primary filings and proxy materials rather than the commentary.

This is a watchlist, not a set of recommendations, and it is not ranked. Verify every figure against current filings and live market data before acting on any of it.

For the mechanics behind these figures, see what total contract value is and why it is not revenue, what gross margin is and why it matters more than revenue growth, and how to calculate cash runway from a 10-Q.
